More about the Sultan Mosque

The name "Sultan Mosque" was named after Sultan Hussein Shah. The taps in the courtyards are used to wash the feet before entering the mosque. In the prayer hall, we will immediately notice the mihrab. It is located in the western wall of the mosque as it is facing the direction of Mecca.

The istana Kampong Glam

This steet is named Sultan Gate because it leads to an istana at the end of the road. A high brick wall surrounds the he istana Kampong Glam at the end of this road. At the entratrance of Sultan Gate, there was a small house called Pondok Jawa n the left side of the road. The inscription found on the right entrance pillar near the Istana grounds is Istana Kampong Glam. The first Sultan that lived in that compound is Sultan Hussien Shah.

Kandahar Street

Kandahar Street is now famous for its Nasi Padang stalls. There is a well-known stall at the entrance of Kandahar Street called 'Warong Nasi Pariaman'. There used to be a row o street hawkers along this road in the sixties. There is also a five-foot way to provide shelter for the shop houses. People go to Kandahar Street during Ramadan to buy food and cakes for the festival. The owner of the Good and Rich cake shop is so confident that his/her shop's sings praises of the confectionary. There is also a restaurant that its name rhymes with ''bamboo'' and its real name is Bumbu.

Arab Street

Spices, textiles, basketry items, sarongs and songkoks are sold along this row of shop houses with five-foot way at Arab Street. The shop houses have high ceilings and window ventilation. Some of the shops there have dried mango leaves hung over their entrance to wear off evil spirits.
